Lincoln High School students, throughout their high school career, are required to complete at minimum 10 hours of community service to graduate. However, the school provides various community service opportunities to students who are searching for local organizations in need of volunteers.
During Senior year, LHS requires all students to participate in a civics class and complete a community service project that requires at least 10 hours of service to be completed. These propositions must provide charitable contributions to a local establishment in need of volunteers. Students may do projects such as food drives, bake sales, or more, and may start on this project as early as ninth grade to prepare for Senior year.
Senior Khailee Milaythong, currently taking civics, has also proclaimed that participating in the class has granted her various chances and has positively impacted her life.
“Completing community service in civics class has helped me by allowing me to explore different opportunities,” Milaythong said.
For her community service project, Milaythong is currently volunteering at the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo. She provides for the community by guiding people and assisting them from 6:00 to 10:30 every day. She plans on completing at least 12 hours of social welfare for civics.
Mr. Allen, the Head of the Social Studies Department, oversees the community service requirements at LHS and has expressed the importance of student involvement in various projects.
“Volunteer hours can be completed at any non-profit organization,” he said. “Local organizations such as the Lincoln Conservation Commission, Family Literacy Center, Youth Sports, and the Lincoln Senior Center are just a few places in town that are always supportive of volunteer hours.”
These organizations provide students with additional ways to fulfill their volunteer hours while making meaningful contributions to the community.
Lincoln High School recommends students engage in several charitable activities because it can benefit them by allowing them to develop their leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. It challenges them to grow and make both a positive impact on their personal development and their communities. Volunteering allows students to better understand their local community, state, and nation by observing how various organizations address specific community needs.
One opportunity LHS students have for volunteer hours includes the chance to join a Teen Ambassador program at the Providence Performing Arts Center. High School students in Rhode Island in grades 10th, 11th, and 12th are eligible to participate in this opportunity and earn at least 10 hours of community service. In this program, members volunteer to welcome patrons to theater events and answer any questions those people may have. Participants who enroll themselves in this project have the chance to be eligible to attend a variety of performances plus have an inside look at various non-performance careers from industry leaders.
Another opportunity the school has provided for its students is joining the Club for Change after-school program run by Ms. Casano. This club gathers various possibilities to volunteer at local organizations and provide for the community. Last year, students in this club assisted their community by crafting blankets for animals stuck in animal shelters, engaging in food pantries and harvest festivals, and painting benches for the Blackstone River Watershed Council. This program meets once every two weeks and discusses new topics for social service at every gathering, students may also research and discuss volunteering opportunities they wish to commit to. Club for Change is a reliable form of earning community service hours and preparing for senior year civics class.
