Senior year is sometimes assumed to be the “easiest” year of their high school careers, but, with the year underway, seniors are faced with the ever frustrating challenge of applying to colleges. Thankfully, here at Lincoln High School, the seniors should have all the tools they need to apply to colleges.
The Lincoln High School guidance department is always there to help students. The counselors start helping students prepare for this moment as soon as they entered the school.
“All students in their freshman year created a four year plan that they share with their school counselor, and every year we get more in depth with post-secondary planning,” said guidance counselor Mrs. Fish. “In their Junior year they were given a glimpse into all of the steps they need to take this year. The biggest thing seniors should be doing is thinking about what pathway they want to pursue.”
The purpose of this plan is to simplify the process and make things easier for the students.
“The overall experience has been pretty smooth,” said high school Senior Jackson Colton. “It’s been relatively easy for me just using the resources I have like my senior checklist and The Common App, as well as other apps to look at schools. I feel as long as you have good grades the acceptances will start to come through.”
For students looking for even more help with the process, LHS offers a semester-long class for seniors called “College Career Planning.” In this class, a teacher will go through the step by step process of applying to colleges. The class is designed for students to make their college process easier, and less stressful.
“This year 114 seniors are taking CCP,” said Mrs. Fish “That doesn’t mean those are the only kids applying for four year colleges. It just means those are the kids who took advantage of that opportunity. When you apply to four year colleges what you should be doing is building a list of schools.”
When taking the College Career Planning class or applying for colleges in general, students will need to create a Common App account. The Common App is an app that makes the college application process a lot easier. It allows students to remain organized and stay on one program during the application process.
“My experience has been pretty good,” said Colton. “The common app is very helpful for applying to schools. You just fill out the common app, answer the questions and then just apply and wait for the acceptances to come in.” .
As college deadlines approach closer, Lincoln seniors should feel prepared as they have all the tools needed for a stress free application process.
