Many students at LHS are experiencing academic struggles, but what students may not know is that the school offers a tutoring program, free of charge. Run by the National Honor Society and adviser Mrs. Schofield, it’s a great opportunity for students who need extra help, and is severely underutilized.
Unfortunately, so far this year, not that many kids have taken advantage of these free sessions.
“Students are missing out on an opportunity to get free tutoring from very intelligent, approachable peers who are willing to help,” said Schofield.
The program is run by members of the National Honor Society, and it’s run after school in the library, and has been around for over ten years at LHS, initially run by Mr. Almeida. Everyone in the school is welcome to attend, and get work done. Ranging from homework to missed lessons, the tutors are more than welcome to help as long as the student brings what they need.
The NHS tutoring is completely free of charge. In comparison to outside tutoring, which can cost between $50-$75 an hour this can save students up to hundreds of dollars. The monetary benefits, on top of working with peers and leaders at the school, are all reasons why students benefit from this program.
“It was great to have an experienced learner help me, and it helped to share my thinking with another person,” said sophomore Luke Cavanaugh, who attended a tutoring session.
Despite these fantastic advantages, many students are not even aware that there is a tutoring center. Not enough students are taking advantage of the program, due to its unknown status among the student body.
“I think it would be great for more students to use the free tutoring center that the NHS has established, and I hope to see more students there in the future!” said senior tutor Lila Swartz. “This center is a great way to unite the under and upperclassmen and also build confidence in students and their work.”
The center runs almost every Thursday in the library from 2-3, and provides a great opportunity for students who want or need extra help.
