Each year, millions of Americans participate in the Great American Smokeout, hosted by the American Cancer Society (ACS), a nationwide event that encourages smokers to quit for at least one day when they raise awareness about the health risks of smoking and vaping. The 2024 Smokeout is set to take place on Thursday, November 21. For 48 years, this annual event has served as a powerful reminder of the dangers of smoking and vaping, but also a call to action for those who want to kick the habit.
The first Great American Smokeout was first held in 1976 in California. What began as a small local event has since grown into a national movement. The idea is simple: smokers pledge to give up cigarettes or vapes for 24 hours, using that time to reflect on the challenges of quitting and consider permanent cessation. Many local schools, businesses, and organizations around the country participate by offering support services and information to help smokers during their journey to quit.
While quitting smoking and vaping is undeniably difficult, it is not impossible. Many smokers find that breaking the habit requires multiple attempts, and the support provided by initiatives like the Smokeout can make a big difference. Nicotine addiction is both physical and psychological, and many people struggle with cravings and withdrawal symptoms when they try to quit. But with the right tools, resources, and support system, it’s possible to kick the habit for good.
Many schools and local health organizations in our area are supporting the Great American Smokeout in 2024 by organizing special events for students, parents, and faculty. These events aim to educate the community about the dangers of smoking and provide information about smoking cessation programs. Findings showed there was a significant drop in the number of U.S. middle and high school students who reported using e-cigarette decreased from 2.13 million (7.7%) in 2023 to 1.63 million (5.9%) in 2024. In Lincoln High School, the Lion P.A.W.S (Prevention, Awareness, & Wellness Support) Club spreads this message all year long, but especially on this day’s event with a Public Service Announcement (PSA) Video, attached below.
The 2024 Great American Smokeout is more than just a day to quit smoking, it’s a reminder of the progress that has been made and the work still to be done. If you or someone you know is looking to quit smoking, remember that help is available. The ACS offers several resources for those looking to quit, including a free quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW), text-based support services, and online resources that provide tips and motivation for quitting smoking. Together, we can all take steps toward a healthier, smoke-free future.
