With Exhibition Day coming up right after break on January 10th, The Lion’s Roar decided to take a look what some juniors have been up to this semester.
Managing the Food Truck – Hailey Miranda
Hailey chose this project because she is part of the Culinary Arts CTE program and has a strong interest in food trucks. She believes this experience could serve as a foundation for a future side gig. Her responsibilities included finding people capable of running the food truck in a food-safe manner, taking orders, creating menus, pricing items, and addressing all other considerations needed to operate the truck successfully. So far, Hailey has successfully managed the food truck during the Homecoming football game.
Improving Men’s Mental Health – Dylan Fonseca
Dylan is doing his project on men’s mental health because he explained that he does not think the subject is touched on enough. Mental health has been a big part of his life; unfortunately, his close friend passed away due to not having the necessary help that he needed. He is taking the initiative to create a focus group and spread awareness so men can get help. Dylan explained how men feel like their feelings don’t matter, so they try to hide them instead of seeking help. He is making a slideshow explaining some of the mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, and providing different sources that men could reach, and he is going to be putting it on the televisions in the cafeteria for everybody to see.
Converting an Old Boat into a Bass Boat – Brennan Robert
Brennan project is turning an old boat into a bass boat. He chose this project because he has been fascinated with woodworking and boats since he was a little kid. He has always wanted a boat for himself so he is using the exhibition as an opportunity to create what he wants. Brennan wants a running fishing boat to explore the water in Rhode Island and have transportation on the water. His process consists purchasing the boat, studying it, third adding two decks, storage space for life jackets and other essential items, a live well, a battery spot, fishing rod holders, and finally, flooring to the decks of the boat.
Charity Pickleball Tournament – Dylan Embrey
Dylan project is going to be running a pickleball tournament for charity. The tournament is going to consist of different events, such as women’s, men’s, mixed doubles, and singles events. To enter, the fee is going to be $20 and is going to be held at the ForeCourt Tennis Club in Cumberland. The money that he receives from this tournament is going to be given to the Rhode Island Society for Prevention of Cruelty Animals. This project is important to him because he is passionate about ensuring humane treatment for animals. Since his childhood, animals have been a big part of his life, and he is willing to do whatever he can to make sure they are ensured protection.
Crocheting a Climate Change Blanket – Maya Crocker
Maya is going to be crocheting a blanket that represents a data set showing the rising global temperatures from the last 174 years. The data is going to be the deviation in degrees Celsius from the average global temperature of the 20th century, from 1850 to 2024. The blanket is based on Ed Hawkins’ “Warming Stripes” which shows a visual representation of the long-term rise in global warming. Maya chose this project because she thinks there has been a very strong uptick in climate change denial in recent years and wanted to create a more approachable visual representation of the rising global change. She thinks if climate change deniers are presented with less threatening and hostile evidence, they may be willing to learn more about the topic.
