With a new coaching staff, a higher division, and a fresh roster, this year’s girls basketball season is all about change. These shifts bring excitement and challenges as the team looks to grow and succeed in their new environment.
“There will be a few major differences between this year and last year,” said the team’s new head coach, Jeffery Paiva, who stepped into the role after two years coaching JV and assisting Varsity. The coaching staff also includes Jenn Rado, who will now serve as the assistant and JV coach.
One of the biggest adjustments will be the team’s move up to Division 2, bringing a tougher schedule with matchups against Cumberland, Smithfield, Scituate, and Narragansett, and St. Ray’s.
“This will provide some new opponents and challenges,” Paiva explained.
Another hurdle has been replacing key seniors from last season, including standout players Lauren Cipriano and Tayla Valentin. Lauren Cipriano was a key player for the Lions when it came to scoring, joining one of Lincoln’s most prestigious sports groups, the 1000 point club.
“Replacing the production of last year’s seniors is going to be a huge hurdle,” Coach Paiva admitted.
Their absence leaves room for other players to step up and contribute to the team’s success. This year’s team will look to sophomores Payton Bernardino and Brielle Lambert to put points on the board.
To handle these challenges, the team plans to adopt a faster pace and improve its defensive intensity—two areas that have been weaknesses in the past.
“We are looking to play with better pace and defensive intensity,” Paiva said.
There will also be a focus on shifting from relying on individual talent to working together as a unit.
“Communication will definitely be key for us this season,” said sophomore Payton Bernardino.
“[Family] is the theme of our season this year,” Paiva shared. This emphasis on unity aims to create a stronger bond among players and coaches, helping them face the demands of Division 2 together.
With a new coaching staff, tougher competition, and a focus on teamwork, the season is set to be a test of growth and resilience. The team is ready to embrace the challenges ahead and build something lasting as they take on their new division and form a stronger, united family on the court.
