With the spring sports season underway, Lincoln baseball looks to take the field and bounce back from a tough season last year in which they finished outside of the playoffs with a 6-13 record.
This will be made more difficult after losing four notable seniors. The team’s top three pitchers, All State second teamer Sean Clifford, Joey Conti, and Jaiden Torres all graduated. The team also graduated starting infielder Daniel Lee.
Despite this, the Lions are coming in hungry and as confident as can be.
“I don’t think we feel a lot of pressure because this year as a team we feel really confident that we’re gonna be good and compete,” said senior captain Isaac Cabral.
Nonetheless, a new core of players looks to take a step forward to bring Lincoln baseball back to the playoffs.
“This year it’s a really junior heavy team with two key senior pitchers,” said junior Joey Lezon. “I’m confident everyone will play their role and do what we need to do to win.”
This season, some key players to highlight are senior captain pitchers Isaac Cabral and Jon-Luca Feole, as well as third baseman junior captain Lucas Marshall, junior pitcher Joey Lezon and junior shortstop Tyler Almeida. All are returning starters from last year’s roster.
With all these players ready to step up, the Lions could be looking on track for a path back to the Division I playoffs.
“We got a lot of returners this year but we’re still a young team and we have big plans this year. Hopefully we can make a run in the playoffs,” head coach Steve Reynolds said.
The team began the regular season with a 5-3 win in Bristol against the Mt. Hope Huskies but then fell 11-3 to North Kingstown on April 4th and 5-7 to Portsmouth on April 10th.
The Lions will aim to even their record when they take the trip to Barrington on Monday with the first pitch at 12:00 p.m.
