Lincoln Public Schools has announced Dr. Kevin McNamara will replace the outgoing Dr. Larry Filippelli as the district’s next superintendent. The school board confirmed his new position on March 24, and although his official start date is July 1, the transition is already underway.
After serving as superintendent for the last seven years, Filippelli is leaving the district in good hands. McNamara is no stranger to the Lincoln community, having spent the last two and a half decades in the district.
“I’m very excited about the new position,” said McNamara. “Dr. Filippelli left the district in a good place and I’m excited to pick up where he left off.”
Dr. Filippelli, who has served as superintendent since 2018, will remain in the role until July 1st. During his time as assistant superintendent, Dr. McNamara played a key role in several district-wide initiatives, including academic curriculum changes, staff development, and expanding student programs. He is expected to continue those efforts as head superintendent.
“I look forward to continuing the initiatives we have been working on,” McNamara said. “The projects at the elementary level are exciting. I want to continue to develop our vision of a graduate, building programs for students.”
His professional journey within the school district began in 1999 when he took on the role as an English teacher at Lincoln High School. His enthusiasm for education and commitment to nurturing student success was quickly acknowledged by colleagues and administration.
In 2002, Dr. McNamara transitioned into the role of athletic director, which he effectively managed alongside his teaching responsibilities. His impressive performance in these dual roles later led to his promotion to assistant principal of Lincoln High School in 2005. Three years later, he ascended to the position of principal.
In 2019, Dr. McNamara’s dedication to educational excellence culminated in his appointment as assistant superintendent.
McNamara’s colleagues say he brings a collaborative leadership style, a deep understanding of the district’s needs, and a strong commitment to student success.
“He is a great person to work with and he is very understanding of teachers, we have a great working relationship with each other and have for over 25 years, his dedication and love for Lincoln is shown through his hard work,” said Mr. Schofield.
With the district’s recent growth and ongoing efforts to strengthen academic achievement, the transition in leadership comes at a critical time. Dr. McNamara’s experience and familiarity with the community position him well to lead Lincoln Public Schools into its next chapter.
