Olá e seja bem-vindo. Most readers won’t know what this means, but those Lincoln High School students who do will finally have the opportunity they deserve, to have their own Honor Society.
LHS’s application was recently approved by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Mrs. Botelho, Lincoln’s only Portuguese teacher, applied for the honor society to help students continue Portuguese throughout high school.
“I’m very pleased we will now have our own Portuguese Honor Society,” said Botelho. “I believe this will be an incentive for students to continue the study of Portuguese.”
Mrs. Botelho currently teaches levels 1-4 of Portuguese in addition to a Spanish 1. Lincoln’s French and Spanish curriculums have had their own honor society for years, but our school now finally has one for Portuguese.
“I wanted there to be a Portuguese Honor Society so the Portuguese students had the same opportunities as the students taking Spanish and French.” said Botelho
Freshman Portuguese student Kelsey Cardoso is eager to be able to take this opportunity and use it to her greatest potential.
“I would like to be part of Portuguese’s honor society because I want to dig deeper into my heritage and be a part of something bigger,” said Cardoso.
Being part of an honor society involves a significant leadership role. It highlights individuals who have shown their dedication to a certain class as well as other achievements. Students in the Honor’s society will be recognized for it on their college application. Students also must be at least a sophomore, enrolled in Portuguese 2, and maintain a B+ or higher.
Current Honors Portuguese 2 student Alyssa Lopes is also planning on joining the honor society next year in hopes of getting more involved.
“I want a chance to be involved with the language more and it would be a good extracurricular to have,” said Lopes.
Having a Portuguese Honor Society will allow those in a Portuguese course to further their study of the language. This can be used as an opportunity to grow their knowledge of the language, culture, and people of Portuguese society.
Boa sorte to all Portuguese students planning on joining Lincoln High School’s new Portuguese Honor Society!
