The Lincoln High School football season has started the season slowly, with a loss in their first game, but they remain optimistic after securing their first win on Saturday against Moses Brown.
“My hope for the team is that we remain competitive in Division 2 this year,” head coach Corey Gaskell said. “We moved up from Division 3 last season and were able to compete at a high level. As a coaching staff we are looking forward to the challenge of replicating that.”
The LHS football team has many returning seniors this year including captains Jayden Rodrigues, Jarret O’Hagan, Carson Mellen, and Scott Nicoll.
“A big strength of our team is that we have upperclassmen who have been in the program and playing with each other for three or four years,” Coach Gaskell said. “One of the more challenging aspects that we face is that we have players in starting spots for the first time in their high school career.”
The victory over Moses Brown, the second in a row, was an important response to the Lions’ first two games of the season, a 20-14 preseason loss to Cumberland High School, and a 46-18 regular season loss against Shepherd Hill High School from Massachusetts.
“Regarding the last game we played against a very talented and disciplined team in Cumberland that I have no doubt we will be competing for Division 1,” Coach Gaskell said. “With any loss our athletes do a great job of identifying what went wrong for us and fixing those mistakes. All of our players take pride in getting better, learning from and moving forward from a loss.”
Last season the Lions successfully moved up to division 2, finishing with a 5-2 record and finishing in fifth place.
“Our strength is having each other’s back and having the heart to finish the game no matter the score,” said football player Liedson Centeio.
Lincoln will be on the road again against West Warwick on Friday the 26th.
