Lincoln High School was happy to welcome social studies teacher David Clegg, a former Lincoln Middle School history teacher, back into the LHS family this year as a history teacher for sophomores and juniors. When Ms. Casano took a position out of district, Mr. Clegg jumped at the chance. He said his inspiration for returning to the high school was for a change of pace.
“I wanted a little something different in coming to the high school,” Mr. Clegg said.
Described as an understanding and patient teacher by past students, Mr. Clegg comes to LHS with a positive reputation. The other history teachers have expressed their excitement regarding Mr. Clegg and his new position.
“Mr. Clegg is a long-time and valued member of the Social Studies Department,” social studies teacher Frank Yip said. “We missed him when he went to the middle school many years ago, and I am extremely pleased he has come back to the high school. He works well with all the teachers in the department and will be able to enrich us with his years of experience as a teacher.”
Many of his former students express their gratitude for Mr. Clegg, recalling how his class helped them in the past.
“He’s the reason I’m in Honors, because he was very patient and he took his time with his students,” junior Charlotte Furland said. “He’ll joke around, and he’s very easygoing.”
Despite his long career in education, being a teacher was not Mr. Clegg’s first choice.
“I thought I’d be a lawyer. I graduated and actually did not want to go to law school,” said Mr. Clegg. “So, I did a couple of volunteer years doing different things, and one of them brought me to the Czech Republic, where I taught English. I fell in love with teaching.”
When he returned from the Czech Republic, Mr. Clegg went back to Providence College to get his teacher certification. He recalled having found a “good place to work” after being hired by Lincoln High School in 1998.
In 2000, Mr. Clegg moved to Lincoln Middle School, where he would teach 7th and 8th grade history for 25 years. Now, he is back at the same school in which he started.
“My students are a very important part of my life,” Mr. Clegg said about his return.
