The deafening roar of LHS students filled the gymnasium. The packed bleachers were a sea of red, white and blue, erupting with enthusiastic cheers and stomps. It was impossible to hear anything other than the screams of school spirit as each grade fought to prove their dominance at this year’s Battle of the Classes.
The seniors fought hard to make their last year count, and they succeeded. They won the night after earning first place in Dodge Ball, Tug-of-War, Knockout, and the Balloon Pop Relay.
“This year’s battle is more special because it’s our last one, so I think everyone’s taking it more seriously,” senior Breanne Bouthillette said.
Coming in second place was the junior class, who won Limbo, Ring Pass, and the 3-Legged/Wheelbarrow Relay. The sophomores finished in third place with victories in Musical Chairs, Hungry Hungry Hippos, and the Unified Bean Bag Toss. The Freshmen weren’t able to win a single event, putting them in last place.
Despite going home without any victories, the freshman enjoyed being part of the LHS tradition.
“A lot of people were just making it sound stressful, but it’s overall really fun,” said freshman Adeline Macomber.
The event is always crowded with students ready to compete and support their class, but, some students feel that despite the enormous enthusiasm shown this year, last year was even more extreme.
“People have calmed down a little bit, but it’s still always rowdy,” said senior and student council president Lorelei Archambault.
Many students see Battle of the Classes as an opportunity to connect and have fun with their peers outside of the classroom.
“I just love the feeling of community because I feel like all of the sophomores feel pretty separate on a daily basis,” sophomore Olivia Vilner said. “Coming together like this as a class all in one place and cheering for the same goal is really amazing.”
