Another school year has started, and Lincoln High School students have noticed some new changes in the cafeteria, with new menu options that focus on healthier and more delicious food. These updates have gotten everyone talking, from students to teachers.
One of the standout additions has been the introduction of a variety of flavorful meals, replacing some of the less popular dishes from past years. For instance, last week the school cafeteria decided to serve tacos, which has quickly become a hit among students. With toppings like seasoned beef, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and salsa, the tacos were definitely a big success.
“The tacos were actually good,” said sophomore Josh Denson. “I like them alot better than the usual food the cafeteria usually serves”.
These tacos are just one way Lincoln High is enhancing its food offerings. The school has teamed up with local food vendors and nutrition experts to create meals that are not only tasty but also comply with national nutrition guidelines.
“We’re excited to provide students with meals from different cultures that they will enjoy,” said lunch staff member Dave Johnson.
Along with the new tasty options, the school is also working to encourage healthier eating habits. A major change in the menu this year is swapping out tater tots, which are popular but not very nutritious, for corn. This switch is part of a larger initiative to include more whole grains, vegetables, and fruits in students’ diets. Corn, known for being high in fiber and rich in essential nutrients like vitamin C and magnesium, is viewed as a healthier choice compared to the fried potatoes students were used to.
The change has received a variety of opinions from students. Some were upset about the removal of tater tots, while others have started to welcome the healthier choices.
“I wasn’t too thrilled at first,” said Conor Johnson. “But honestly, the corn isn’t too bad, and I understand it’s better for us. It’s just gonna take some time to get used to it .”
Besides getting rid of tater tots, Lincoln High has also added more fresh fruit to their menu. Students can choose to include fresh fruit with their meals. A new salad bar, featuring a range of greens and toppings, has also been popular among students who are health-conscious.
The cafeteria staff, along with the school’s nutrition committee, is actively working on updating the menu. They will continue to add new meals, and get student opinions to make sure the changes are well-received. They’re also planning to include more international foods like stir-fry and pasta soon.
The reaction to these changes has been really great, with lots of students and staff saying that the cafeteria now feels like a friendlier and more fun place to grab a meal.
“I used to pack my lunch from home nearly every day, but now I’m actually excited to check out what they’re offering,” shared senior Alex Denson.
Lincoln High School’s cafeteria is raising the bar for school lunches this year by focusing on not just taste but also health too. As the year goes on, students can expect more creative and international meals, showing that healthy food can be delicious too.
