Coming off an undefeated championship season and starting the season with an all new coach, Lincoln High School’s boys volleyball team enters this year with high expectations and a new set of challenges. Despite key departures and major changes in leadership, the team remains focused on maintaining its winning culture and competing for another title.
One of the team’s biggest challenges will be replacing last year’s seniors. Many graduating players were key contributors to the team’s success, leaving positions that will require younger athletes to step up and take on larger roles.
Junior Zavaughn Fonseca acknowledged this challenge.
“The team mainly faces a setback in positions left by our seniors from last year, as some were key components to the team’s proficiency,” he said.
New head coach Andy Mather is embracing the challenge with a clear vision.
“We have a championship mindset–’EVERY REP COUNTS’,” Mather said. “Bring intent. Play with purpose.”
He acknowledged the obstacles ahead, including filling key roles and adjusting to a new coaching system.
“We have big shoes to fill–many new roles and opportunities for our returning players,” Mather said. “Adjusting to a new coach in terms of training, expectations, and even new drills will be important.”
Junior Liam Connell is setting ambitious goals for both himself and the team.
“We want to show out this season and win another state championship back-to-back,” Connell said.
However, the team also faces a major transition off the court.
“All three of our coaches from the undefeated season resigned in the offseason…that means a new coach who doesn’t know any of our athletes or our program.”
Despite the uncertainty, Connell expressed confidence in the program’s direction.
“I am very confident that the athletics department found the best coach available,” he said. “The team has grown tremendously this season…almost everyone has spent their free time playing for a club team, playing with friends, and working out in the gym.”
Mather also highlighted several seniors expected to lead this season: Tyler Biddle, Ariel Donis Rosales, Christian Hernandez, Liedson Centeio, and Jacob Lizotte. While roles are still being determined, their leadership will be critical in guiding the team through this transition.
“We already have an outstanding culture,” Mather said. “We are expecting to display energy, commitment, unity, and play with passion and enjoyment.”
With a mix of experienced returners, motivated underclassmen, and a new coaching staff, LHS’s boys volleyball team is determined to prove that they can win once again. Their home opener is Thursday, March 26 against Coventry.
