The Lions golf team capped a top ten season finish with an individual performance that marks one of their players as one of the best in the state. Luke Cavanaugh made an impressive finish at Cranston Country Club placing fifth and securing his spot as a First Team All-State player. The three-year varsity golfer at Lincoln Highschool. Cavanaugh shot a 71 (par) on day 1 and a 79 on the second day.
“I feel happy with my performance,” Luke said. “It’s definitely something to build off of, and I was just very appreciative and grateful for the opportunity to play day two.”
After a very strong first day shooting 71 (course par) he was tied for 2nd place going into day two.
“I had a nice neutral day shooting even par, I had a lot of fun and the course was in great shape,” Cavanaugh said.
Luke attributed his success to his putting on the first day; it was the club he felt most confident with.
Heading into the second day, Luke was paired with the #1 golfer in the state, Drew Macleod. Cavanaugh was excited to be in the final pairing and be exposed to a new atmosphere and a different, more intense level of focus.
“I was super excited heading into the second day and couldn’t wait to get back out on the course,” he said.
On the second day, Cavanaugh had a solid front nine performance shooting a three-over par 38. He was in third place until hole 13 where he made a costly mistake in going out of bounds and picked up two strokes. He recovered with a strong birdie on 14, then continued to play solid golf throughout the rest of his back nine, shooting 41.
“It wasn’t us against each other,” Cavanaugh said about the final day. “It was us against the course.”
This event boosted his confidence significantly, with a strong performance and an excellent spring. This will allow him to strive in tournaments this summer and be a serious contender in the Junior Amateur.
Next year looks promising with Cavanaugh to be leading the Lions. The goal is to be competitive in the North Division.
“The team is going to be super strong heading into next season and Luke will be a massive part leading us into being contenders in the state championship,” head Coach Nick Mersca said.
