Taking the drivers test at the DMV is a big deal for most high schoolers. It’s the moment that could lead to real freedom, but it can also bring some serious nerves. Knowing what happens during the test can make the whole experience feel a lot less scary.
To start off, expect some waiting. Even with an appointment, the DMV usually isn’t super fast. There will most likely be others sitting around looking just as nervous. That part can actually be more comforting; everyone’s in the same boat. While waiting, staff will check things like your permit, insurance, and your vehicle. Depending on if you go with your parents or through a company like Triple A, that will determine their inspection.
Before the driving part, there’s a quick car safety check. The examiner might ask you how to turn on the headlights, hazard lights, or windshield wipers. It’s nothing complicated, but it can be stressful if someone isn’t familiar with the car. Practicing these controls before arriving can prevent an awkward moment.
Once the test actually begins, the examiner gives simple instructions. They won’t try to make conversation or distract the driver; they only speak when it’s time to give a direction. The test includes making basic turns, fully stopping at stop signs, parallel parking, checking your mirrors, etc. The examiner is mainly watching to see if the driver is safe and aware.
Parking tends to be where most struggle. Rhode Island requires a driver to be able to parallel park. It also requires backing into a space and doing a three-point turn. The most important thing is to go slowly. Rushing leads to mistakes while taking time shows control.
When the test ends, the examiner will go over how it went, depending on who you get. When you finish, they will tell you whether or not you passed. Not passing the first time does not mean someone is a bad driver; it just means more practice is needed, which is always beneficial.
In the end, the best way to be ready is to practice regularly, stay calm, and remember the examiner is not there to trick you. The test is simply about showing that you can be safe on the road and that you know all the laws of the road. Once it’s done, whether it takes one attempt or a few, the sense of independence and accomplishment definitely makes it worth it.
