In recent years, a nationwide movement to expand athletic opportunities for girls has grown, with flag football emerging as one of the most popular options, and Lincoln High School almost joined the trend. There was the potential for creating a new girls’ flag football team, but there wasn’t enough interest to get it off the ground.
Unlike regular football, flag football is a non-contact sport in which the defense must pull a flag from the ball carrier, rather than tackling them.
The idea was initially brought forward through an exhibition project by Ava Mello.
“What inspired me to do my exhibition on girls’ football was to promote female sports by hosting the flag football game because I’ve always been into football and always thought that girls should be able to play it and that it should be a sport here at LHS,” Mello said. “So I wanted to promote girls’ sports not only in football but in general too.”Although the concept of a new sport for girls seemed great, actually executing it at the school proved difficult. Flag football would run in the springtime, which conflicts with the other spring sports programs.
Last year, Mr. O’Connor sent an email to the student body asking about interest in starting a girls’ flag football team, but there weren’t a significant number of responses.
Principal Mr. Hopkins was enthusiastic about the idea and supported it. Its failure, however, did not prevent Mr. Hopkins from wanting to see something similar in the near future.
“We couldn’t manifest it, neither last year nor this year,” said Mr. Hopkins, “but I think it would be a great thing if we have the numbers to back it up. I would love to see it.”
Junior Kylee Bullard, who previously played for the LHS football team, expressed her interest in joining the flag football team if it were established.
“Yes, I would’ve liked to join the team; one was supposed to happen last spring, but I guess it never happened,” said Bullard.
In November the Principal Committee on Athletics will vote to sanction flag football as a RI high school sport.
