The LHS girls’ varsity basketball team is having a great season this year with a 9-6 regular-season record, and with two weeks left of the season, they are hoping to be the first Lincoln girls basketball team to make the Division II playoffs in 15 years.
The Lions did make the D III playoffs two years ago, but struggled last year after being bumped up to D II. The team missed the playoffs with a 6-12 record. They have improved this season, but they aren’t settling.
“We should focus [improving] our chemistry by building better communication and trust,” junior Payton Bernadino said. “We also need to stay consistent while working on teamwork, defense, and overall performance to get stronger in games.”
The girls are working very hard to make it to the playoffs with a focus on their weaknesses to make sure they can clean up any mistakes to make it to the playoffs.
“I believe our weaknesses are mental focus and confidence on the court, but if we stay consistent and work hard at our goals with a positive mindset, we’ll see a big improvement,” Bernadino said.
Captain Carly Fraize echoed this idea.
“I think one of the biggest things we need to work on is coming together more as a team, hyping each other up, and staying locked in,” she said. “We will do this by taking one game at a time, instead of looking too far ahead into future games. When we focus on future games it puts too much stress on ourselves. We should for now only focus on consistency and effort every time we play.”
The squad has had many games where things came together, including big wins against Narragansett 58-22, and Mount Hope 47-27.
The Lions play at Mount Hope tonight at 7:00 pm. Hopefully the Lions will secure another win and get another step closer to the playoffs.
