With a new season underway, the softball team is focused on improving and competing well enough to make a strong playoff run.
Last season, the team ranked eighth overall in the second division, finishing with an 8-8 record. Despite being a young team, the softball team exhibited ambition and drive during the previous season, which they hope will carry them through this upcoming one.
Head coach Alyssa McCoart attests to this.
“Although we are still a young team, I believe we have more experienced players who can make an impact this season,” she said. “I expect the team to compete harder and advance further in the playoffs than we did last season.”
Junior Anna Danis echoed her coach’s expectations.
“Our first goal is to grow our skills and continue to build off of the foundation we had from last year,” Danis said. “We would also like to hold the championship and play at Rhode Island College. But most importantly, we want to have fun.”
Though their roster is still young, they have strong leadership from experienced players who could help the team improve this year. Some of the most noteworthy players are senior Lucia Whyte, sophomore Brook Tillson, and junior Anna Danis.
The team’s key players set the standard for the rest of the roster. McCoart said the team’s leaders must exhibit a strong work ethic: “Take practice seriously, ask for extra reps, and be open to learning and improving”.
“I think the team will grow to be a strong group,” Danis said, “We need to make sure we are all communicating and on the same page from practices to games to everything in between. I think there are going to be some ups and downs, but as long as we remain level-headed and confident, we will grow together.”
The first game is this Thursday, March 26th, at 4:15 P.M against Johnston.
